1. The name Seraphina is unique. How did you come up with it?
Seraphina’s mom’s name is Clarabelle, which she hates! She wanted her kids to have more ordinary names, so Seraphina’s older brothers are Michael, Luke, and Gabriel. They’re all biblical names and very common. By the time Seraphina was born, her mom had somewhat gotten over the idea of common being important to a name. She still wanted to give her daughter a biblical name. I think that was to ward off the family’s association with Hell’s Hollow. But she was so excited to finally have a girl, she didn’t want to give her an ordinary biblical name like Rachel or Rebecca. The angels in the bible are called seraphim. And that was the inspiration for Seraphina.
2. What inspired you to write Hell’s Hollow?
The answers to this question and the next one go together. There’s an area in the Sierra Nevada where my family and I go every summer. There’s a road there with a very large road sign called Hell’s Hollow. For years, every time we passed it I would think, someday I’m going to write a book about a town called Hell’s Hollow. I had no idea what the story would be about. I just knew that the name Hell’s Hollow conjured up something a little bit spooky and magical. I spent a lot of time exploring the area and really getting a feel for it. Then I just started with the two main characters and let them tell me the story.
3. Are any of the character’s loosely based on people in your life?
Actually, no, I can’t think of any character in this book that is based on someone I know. The characters sprung to life on the page and took on storylines all on their own.
4. Will there be more of Sera and Zach?
Maybe! We’ll see if readers want more!
5. If so will it remain YA or will you turn of the heat?
Well, in this initial story, because of the situation Zach was in, staying true to the story meant the heat had to be at a low simmer. But if it were to continue, the two main characters would be older and in a different situation, so yes, there would definitely be room to turn up the heat 🙂
