Left Drowning by Jessica Park

Review for
Left Drowning
by Jessica Park
5 Stars

I have to confess I read Left Drowning almost two months ago. It has taken me this long to write my review because I literally did not have the words to describe my feelings when I finished. There was no doubt in my mind that Jessica Park deserved a 5 star plus rating for her extraordinary work. But, what could I say to adequately explain how this book affected me? So, like those expensive handmade chocolates I occasionally stop and buy then hide because they are too delicious to share, I kept Left Drowning to myself. The hiding and not sharing was a poor choice on my part. I deeply apologize for my errant ways. I am now sharing my thoughts because I know Left Drowning needs to be read often and by as many people as possible.

The subject matter of this book is not light and airy; it is heavy and has unimaginable depths. This book explores what happens to people when they are so broken and damaged by life experiences that they all they can do is cope. Day to day living is key to survival for these individuals. This is the state in which readers first meet Blythe McGuire. She is surviving, but a at sub-level that even she questions. One chance meeting with the dramatic and instantly loveable Sabin Shepard, and Blythe senses light begin to penetrate her dark world. One more chance meeting with Christopher Shepard, Sabin’s sexy, self-assured brother, and Blythe’s reality shifts into supernova.

One by one Blythe meets the Shepard siblings including the twins, Estelle and Eric.

Each sibling with their unique personality helps to show Blythe what the true definitions of family and living are. The eclectic Shepard family adopts Blythe and helps her to mend the broken vessel that she is. Chris, in particular, reignites the fire of feeling in Blythe despite her attempts to tamp that fire down. Their love story is a sensual and steamy bomb that threatens to explode at any given moment.

Left Drowning is layers of emotional complexity covered with generous layer of forgiveness and hope. Jessica Park has written a story that challenged me to think and feel as I read my way through it. The emotions I experienced included, anger, angst, compassion, despair, hope, humor, love, and raw passion. Each of these emotions existed at different levels. Left Drowning was not a book that I could finish in a night. I did not want to put it down, but I simply had to. At points I just had to stop and absorb what I was experiencing. Only after a break was I able to go back and continue my journey with Blythe and the Shepard family. When I finished Left Drowning, I truly missed the time I spent with these complex and colorful characters. Somewhere along my journey with them they had stealthily taken up residence in my heart.

Jessica Park has written another book that is as entertaining as it is profound. I am still in awe of how she deftly she balances the fine line between amusement and tragedy. She lets us experience and understand the deepest parts of the human psyche, giving us hope that even the most broken of us can be repaired. Ms. Park shows us that often times the random introduction of people into our lives is providential and quite necessary to help us progress as the complete persons we are meant to be.

Fear of Falling by S.L. Jennings

Fear of Falling Synopsis
I can’t remember the last time I felt completely safe. Security seemed more like a luxury to me, reserved for those who were fortunate enough to have picture perfect childhoods. For those who didn’t bear the ugly scars that keep me bound in constant, debilitating fear. I’ve run from that fear my entire life. But when I met him, for once, I couldn’t run anymore.
He scared the hell out of me in a way that excited every fibre of my being. It wasn’t the tattoos or the piercings. It wasn’t the warmth that seemed to radiate from his frame and blanket me whenever he was near. It was just…him. The scary beautiful man that threatened to alter 23 years of routine and rituals, and make me face my crippling fear.
My name is Kami and I am constantly afraid. And the thing that scares me the most is the very thing I want.
***Inspired by true events***

Review: 5+ Stars

“He had the eyes of a man that had seen things. Eyes that were soulful and wise, yet vibrant and sultry. Eyes that made me want to run away, yet urged me to stay.”

For Kamilla Duval, those eyes are a warning signal. Kami, who has seen her share of things, must avoid the owner of those eyes, Blaine Jacobs, at all costs.” She has spent her life building walls to protect herself from the horrors that life has constantly confronted her with. If she keeps those walls in tact, she can live in relative safety and manage her fears. She has been careful to let in only people who can understand her and are willing to protect her at all costs, Dominic Trevino and Angel Cassidy. They have all seen their share the dark side of life. Together they have become a family which functions quite well. The problem arises when Kami ‘s well-built defenses come into direct opposition with what her heart tells her she needs – Blaine Jacobs.

Blaine Jacobs is the bartender at the Dive, a local bar. He is a sexy southern boy with chocolate brown eyes, tattoos, piercings, and a smile that is irresistible. His life has been less that picture perfect. But, with the help of his Uncle Mick and his Cousin C.J, he has managed to face his demons and make a drama free life for himself on his own terms. When Kami walks into Dive one night, he is taken aback by his attraction to her. He knows that she is someone who could definitely complicate his world. Even though his mind tells him Kami could very well upset his balanced world, he cannot keep his distance. Blaine knows he should leave her alone but, his instincts tell him he must be the one to help her shed the pain he sees in her eyes.

Fear of Falling is the exquisitely written story of Kami and Blaine. S. Jennings tells their story from dual points of view. With beautifully detailed descriptions and raw emotion, Ms. Jennings communicates the story of these two terribly scarred individuals who take an unavoidable risk and explore their attraction to each other. The unhurried pace and vivid imagery of her writing style only serve to enhance the sultry southern setting of the story. From the very expressive and dramatically understated opening words I was intrigued. As the chapters progressed I was enthralled and unable to put Fear of Falling down until I knew how it ended.

It was my intention to read a few chapters before bed. When I finally turned the last page of Fear of Falling, it was 5:30 a.m. I have not found a book, recently, that has impacted me so forcefully. It literally had me curled in the fetal position and crying as the sun began to peek through my bedroom blinds. Fear of Falling is intensely sensual and emotional It reached into the deepest part of my heart and aroused feelings I did not expect to surface. S. Jennings has given me a precious gift in this story that will always remind me hope and love are the keys to overcoming the shocking and awful moments life will inevitably lay in our paths.

**I love to read when I have a chance. I love making new friends, too. But PLEASE don’t add me if you’re an author just wanting me to read your book and promote yourself shamelessly. You should have more of a reason for friending me than THAT. Also, please don’t recommend me books, I have enough on my TBR and not enough time to read. And I’m a super picky reader. Cheers!**

The daughter of a Norwegian Viking and a Finnish Moomin, Karina Halle grew up in Vancouver, Canada with trolls and eternal darkness on the brain. This soon turned into a love of all things that go bump in the night and a rather sadistic appreciation for freaking people out. Like many of the flawed characters she writes, Karina never knew where to find herself and has dabbled in acting, make-up artistry, film production, screenwriting, photography, travel writing and music journalism. She eventually found herself in the pages of the very novels she wrote (if only she had looked there to begin with).

Karina holds a screenwriting degree from Vancouver Film School and a Bachelor of Journalism from TRU. Her travel writing, music reviews/interviews and photography have appeared in publications such as Consequence of Sound, Mxdwn and GoNomad Travel Guides. She currently lives on an island on the coast of British Columbia where she’s preparing for the zombie apocalypse.

When I’m not writing, I’m reading. And when I’m not reading I might be writing up a review. I’m wary of books with a lot of hype but unless something has bad reviews across the board, I’ll probably still take a chance on it and give my honest opinion. Everyone is different and I won’t pass up an adventure just because someone else didn’t like it. And that’s what I think when I look at my bookshelf…what adventure can I go on today?

That’s how I’ve gotten through nineteen years of life. It’s what I do every single day–no matter how badly the odds are stacked against me.

Persevere, and survive.

Those are my two guiding words. I never knew either of my parents. I have no family and no home. The only person I could ever rely on was myself. In this cruel world, that’s about as much as I can ask for.

Love? Hah. Don’t talk to me about love. I stopped believing in it the day my first boyfriend ripped out my heart three years ago.

That’s why love is the last thing on my mind when I leave a packed college bar with a captivating stranger. Yet everything changes when I’m awakened in the middle of the night by a pounding at the door. Suddenly, an arrangement meant for just one night threatens to become something much deeper.

All expectations are thrown to the wind as I’m tangled in a dangerous world unlike anything I can believe. The man I met has secrets swirling around him like a dark cape. I’m about to become his biggest one…

Together, we stumble toward the elevator. Rich breaks away for a second to hit the button. The light doesn’t come on.

“Damn,” he growls, “it’s busted again.”

I’m one step ahead of him. I’d spotted the stairs when we entered. I grab his hand and pull him after me with no hesitation. I start up the cement stairwell, determined to get to his room as fast as possible.

“Penny, wait.”

I look back, confused. “What?”

A devilish smile plays on his lips. “Only this.” Without warning his hands wrap around my waist, and I’m  being lifted up as easily as if I were a doll. He turns to the side and presses my body against the wall, suspending me between him and the concrete.

His mouth crashes down on mine again. I curl my legs around his torso, locking my ankles together, and kiss him back with the passion reserved for a lover after ten long years apart. I didn’t think it was possible, but I’m getting even more turned on. Rich’s hands move down to grasp the outside of my thighs, and I moan into his kiss as the muscles of my core clench in sinful fashion. I want him so

badly. If we don’t get somewhere private soon, I won’t be wholly opposed to jumping him in public.

I gasp as he steps away, freeing me from the wall. I start to fall, but one of his hands darts down to catch me just beneath the knees.  The other one cradles my shoulders. Before I know it, I’m slung across his   arms like a bride on her wedding night.

“I’ve always wanted to carry a girl up these stairs,” Rich admits.

I laugh, and wrap my arm around his neck. “Oh, you are just the best type of romantic.”

Four flights of stairs later, Rich pushes open the fire door to a dimly-lit hallway. He carries me down the hall and stops in front of an entrance on the right. He sets me down, then fishes around in his jeans for the key. When the door creaks open, he sweeps a hand out in front of him. “Welcome to my humble abode.”

I walk in, curious about his apartment. I tend to side with the camp of people who believe that a person’s living arrangements can reveal a lot about his personality. But, I don’t find much to work with here.

The apartment is sparse and dark. Pale moonlight filters in through the balcony window, shining down on the only piece of furniture present: a queen size mattress lying on the floor of the living room. The red brick walls are totally empty—no girly posters or other things I might expect in a bachelor’s apartment. There are no lamps, no chairs, no couches.

After a moment, I notice a second piece of furniture: a small, old-school CRT TV camped in one corner of the studio apartment.

Rich switches on the light. “So?” he asks, “what do you think?”

I walk past the entrance. There’s one hall leading away from the room. It is filled with brown cardboard boxes. Lots and lots of boxes. “Did you just move in or something?”

Rich laughs behind me. “Yeah, something like that. You want a drink?”

“A drink?” I say. “No, I—”

The words catch in my throat as he grabs my hips and spins me around. I had no idea he’d come so close. He’d moved from the door to me without making a sound. His fingers lock together against my lower back, and he tugs me into him, pressing my belly to his waist. I feel his growing erection right away, and a diabolical excitement builds inside me.

 Nothing happens.

For a long moment, Richard just holds me like that, staring into my eyes as I’m left dangling off his arms. His irises are the color of sea mist. I’m hypnotized by the deep intensity I see brewing just beneath the surface. I have no doubt that that type of intensity is mirrored in my eyes.

Then, moving slowly, as if restraining himself, Richard lowers his mouth to cover mine. This time, his kiss is sweet and gentle. Subtle and caring. He explores my upper lip first, then traces the line going to the corner of my mouth. His lips form a perfect mold over mine.

I was wrong before. This is the kiss reserved for a lover you haven’t seen in ten years.

If Forever Comes, the final chapter in the New York Times Bestselling Regret Series (Lost to You and Take This Regret).

Christian Davison’s life is complete. With a ring on Elizabeth’s finger and his daughter at his side, he’s ready to run headlong into their future.

Elizabeth Ayers never believed she would again find this kind of joy—the joy of a family and the wholeness found in the touch of the man she’s always loved.

Their love is intense and their passion only grows as they set out to rediscover each other.

But life is never easy.

Rocked by the unforeseen, Christian and Elizabeth will find themselves fighting for the one thing they hold most important—family.

I stood in the hush of the darkened room, the long drapes pushed to the side as I leaned with one hand pressed to the wall just at the side of the window. I stared out, watching as winter pressed down on the city. Snowflakes fluttered toward the ground as they were set free from the inky sky. Through the haze, lights glimmered, and far below, the city was still alive even though night had grown late.

My past seemed to echo from the streets, the memories so thick they almost seemed alive.

I looked over my shoulder and let my eyes wander over the one who inhabited them all.

Elizabeth lay facing me, twisted just to the side, her blonde hair spread out over the pillow where she rested her head. Her chest lifted and fell in a slow cadence, her soft breaths released into the air.

The deepest kind of devotion quickened my heart and pumped fiercely through my veins.

Sometimes it was hard to believe we’d come this far, that this beautiful girl lying across the room from me had been strong enough to forgive me for the greatest mistake I’d ever made, that she was good enough to look past my failure, and that she had the capacity to lie there now, lost in sleep, free of fear and full of love.

A wistful smile tugged at my mouth as my gaze traveled over her perfect body. She wore a short nightgown, the creamy material bunched up over her hip, the length of her legs fully exposed. One arm was draped over her head, and the other was stretched across the sheets in the spot where I had held her in my arms as she’d fallen asleep.

Emotion squeezed my lungs, knocked at my ribs, just as strong as the desire that lifted in a crushing swell before it settled as a subdued ache in the pit of my stomach.

Elizabeth would never stop stealing my breath.

Only because she possessed my soul.

As if she felt the intensity of my stare, she stirred. Those brown eyes blinked open as she adjusted to the dimness in the room. A soft, sleepy smile crept to her lips when she found me watching her in the shadows. She ran her hand over the sheets on my side of the bed. “What are you doing way over there when you’re supposed to be in bed with me?” she whispered.

“Just thinking.”

She lifted up onto her elbow. “And what are you thinking about?”

My mouth tipped up in a slow grin as I made my way over to her. She rolled onto her back just as I crawled over her, bracing myself on my hands and knees.

“Thinking about you. What else would I be thinking about?” I trailed the back of my index finger down her cheek and along the underside of her jaw. At her chin, I twisted my hand to drag my fingers all the way down her neck to the cleft between her breasts.

A soft breath parted her lips.

“You consume me, Elizabeth,” I said. “Every second.”

Trembling, she reached up to cup my jaw. “Always.”

That word shot straight through me, her touch a firestorm that singed me from the inside out.

And she had it right. I wanted her. Always.

I pressed my hands into the bed on either side of her head, dipped to caress her mouth with mine in the same second her fingers wove through my hair. I could feel her heart hammering, pounding just as hard as mine, this thrum of need spinning through us with the slightest touch.

It’d always been that way.

I rocked and Elizabeth moaned, our bodies pitching and lifting and seeking, the soft skin of her inner thighs like strokes of fire as they brushed against mine. Our tongues caressed and every last inch of my body hardened.

God, there was nothing in this world that felt so good.

I pulled back, one hand gripping the fabric at her hip as I searched her face.

“Elizabeth, I don’t want to wait. I know that’s what we planned, but being here, in this city, it just makes me think of all the time I wasted, and I don’t want to waste any more.”

Shock rolled through her, and brown eyes snapped up to lock on mine. “What do you mean?”

“All of it, Elizabeth…waiting to get married…waiting to add to our family. I want it all…and now…because I want it with you.”

“Don’t say anything now. I just want you to think about it.”

She grabbed my face. “I don’t need to think about it. I’m ready for this. Ready for us to move on.”

Relief and joy escaped me in a throaty groan. It was all I wanted, to spend my life with her, to spend it with our daughter, to live for my family, to watch grow.

“Oh my God, Elizabeth.” I dropped to my elbows, brought us closer, our kiss frenzied between our words.

“I love you so much…so much.”

I sucked at her bottom lip, kiss her at the edge of her perfect mouth, dropped to feast along the line of her jaw.

My nose got lost behind her ear, in her hair, in the softness of her skin.

I burned.

Elizabeth arched, silently begged.

I rose to one elbow and grabbed her left hand, kissed the ring she allowed me to place on her finger. “Forever,” I promised against it.

Her heart thudded a little more. “Forever,” she said.

And I couldn’t wait for forever to begin

The Elemental Prophecy

by Nikki Narvaez

4 Stars

“Your twin flame is the other half of your soul, whom Zeus literally cut and separated you from at the beginning of time for fear of your combined power. You spend your whole life searching for this person, driven to find them. When you find your twin flame and touch them, it is said that a spark of electricity ignites what feels like an inferno inside you, hence the twin flame reference consuming you from inside out.”

Jace Vasquez is the undefeated UFC champion fighter who so eloquently explains the twin flame concept. He is skeptical about their actual existence and has no interest in finding his twin flame. Jace is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl whom he cannot save from a horrible fate. He feels she exists in the real world and is bothered that he cannot find her. By day he wins UFC fights. By night, he celebrates his victories and tries to forget the unforgettable girl from his horrifying dreams.

Brielle De Luca dreams every night of a gorgeous guy whom she cannot save. She is haunted by images of him being carried away by horrible creatures. She is powerless to free him from the terror–filled fate that awaits him. By day, Brielle is busy completing high school and preparing to celebrate her eighteenth birthday with her best friend. One night of celebrating and a chance meeting between Jace and Brielle changes their lives forever.

In Envisioned, author Nikki Narvaez expertly creates a very contemporary story where ancient Greek Gods and mystical forces are still very active in the lives of modern mortals. Envisioned contains the story of a race of people called Elementals. Each member of this race has the ability to control only one of the four elements: Fire, Earth, Air, and Water. They live with a prophecy that says the One will come and be bale to control all four elements at the same time. The One will ultimately fight for and bring peace to the world. Envisioned begins the tale of the One in a way that deserves notice. It is the perfect blend of mythology, magic, and romance. It quickly catches one’s interest with its creative storyline, colorful characters, non-stop action, and hot, sweet romance.

The Do Over Review

Review for
The Do Over
by A.L. Zaun
4 Stars

The Do Over introduces two new and extremely enticing book boyfriends to devoted readers – Rick Marin and Liam Lucas. They are both swoon- worthy Miami men The Do Over also introduces us to a female protagonist reading addicts can truly identify with – Daniela Ruiz.

A self-described bookaholic, Dani lives for her late night dates with her book boyfriends. Her BBFs are definitely better than real men. Without doubt, they are better than her real ex-boyfriend who broke up with her simply because things were just not “happening” for him. Dani escapes with one of her three Kindles into the beautiful world of novels on a daily basis. In this fictional world, she can experience emotions along with the characters but never actually be hurt or disappointed. She is quite happy escaping into her fictional world until her real best friends decide an intervention must take place. They have decided it is time for Dani to rejoin the real world, even if it means risking heartache.

Enter Liam Lucas. This Miami Firefighter fatefully steps into Dani’s world making a huge imapct. Liam is dedicated, responsible, and passionate about his career. His first meeting with Dani sparks an internal fire, which he cannot put out. Despite his attraction to her, he lets her walk away without paving a way to make contact with Dani. At their providential second meeting, Liam is determined not to make that same mistake. He embarks on a journey to show Dani his world and convince her to share it with him.

Re-enter Rick Marin, the consummate male who exudes sexuality and adores women. In return he receives the complete adoration of the women with whom he crosses paths. He once had Dani’s adoration and love until his fear of commitment caused him to cruelly break up with her. He left Dani damaged closed off to other men. After two years, Rick has realized his mistake in dismissing Dani so callously. He has decided to make the necessary life changes to win her back, no holds barred.

A.L. Zaun writes an intriguing, triangular story in which Dani Ruiz must examine her feelings for two very real and very gorgeous men. She is forced to make honest and tough decisions and decide if her future lies with Liam or Rick. The story is quite entertaining with many recognizable references to contemporary literature true bookaholics will enjoy. It explores questions that are very real in many relationships. The Do Over is cleverly written and filled with plenty of action and drama, making it a hard book to put down.

Darkness Before Dawn by Claire Contreras

4 Stars

The amazing cast of characters from Claire Contreras’ There is No Light in Darkness returns in Darkness Before Dawn. Headlined by the ever constant Cole Murphy and the strong-willed Blake Brennan, the story of their life and love becomes more complex, compelling one to keep reading until their fate is decided.

Darkness before Dawn drops the reader right into the heart of the drama where There is No Light in Darkness left off. Readers get to hear Blake’s voice and the details of her horrendous situation. She describes how she survives each day with her love for Cole as the supreme motivation to escape her circumstances. Interwoven with Blake’s voice is Cole’s. He tells readers of his anguish and the lengths he must traverse to bring Blake back into his world so he can be whole again.

The alternating points of view add a new and exciting dimension for Claire Contreras readers. Cole’s point of view brings better understanding of just how deep his devotion for Blake is. Always ready for action and willing to go through all barriers, Cole’s descriptions navigate the many layers of action-filled intrigue involved to find Blake. Both voices make the story more personal and passionate.

Readers also get to know characters who are merely introduced in There is No Light in Darkness. Connor Benson, who was only a passing news story, becomes a very real player in the unfolding drama. The man in the black leather jacket, who readers meet at the end of There is No Light in Darkness, becomes. Dean. He adds an unforgettable dimension to the lives of Blake and Cole. Both are worthy having their own stories told in the future.

Darkness Before Dawn is a perfect conclusion to There is No Light in Darkness. Claire Contreras skillfully explores the boundaries and bonds of family, life, death, revenge, forgiveness, and love. Blake and Cole’s story is infinitely tragic and exquisitely beautiful. The mystery and suspense that surrounds them is more than enough to keep a reader turning pages in search of answers. The passion and love between this couple is what sustains the story in reader’s thoughts and hearts long after the book has been closed.
